Professor Lippold Hakken Lippold Haken has invented a new electronic instrument, the Continuum Fingerboard. It is like a “fretless piano”; the performer can play pitches between the normal piano keys, and the performer can play vibrato and tremolo. Well-known artists are now playing the Continuum, including Dream Theatre and Terry Lawless, keyboardist for U2. Dr. Haken’s research interests include synthesis and processing of musical sounds, real-time computer music systems, music notation and representation, and music technology for the blind. Mark Smart works at the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering and is an accomplished musician on various keyboard and string instruments.
